My experience with a MBP Late 2016

Hi everyone,

I want to share my experience with the ones who are looking for feedback (as I had tried to do before doing all the stuff :)) after patching and successfully installing Sonoma on my MBP 15" Late 2016 with an AMD graphic card.

So far so good! It has been almost 4 days since I installed it.

A bit of story: I've decided to move from Monterey (latest officially supported macOS) to Sonoma 14.7.2 and not Sequoia because I found out many people got problems, and also it is a relatively new release that requires a cycle of updates before being stable. Maybe next year (and based on rumors Sequoia would be the last OS to support Intel-based Macs) I'll do the update via USB as suggested by the FAQ. Also, I wanted to update because my other Apple devices use new features that Notes, Safari, or Calendar on Monterey do not provide and this broke the overall experience (Notes on Monterey does not open PDFs made on iOS 18), very frustrating at some point

What I did before installation: a Time Machine Backup, a First Aid scan using Disk Utility on all the partitions of the main disk, free up space (I left 90 GBs)

Installation using OCLP 2.2.0: I followed the main guide alongside this video https://youtu.be/D8djeFJ1czU?si=Yi3w9mF3EMYy-GS8 and everything went smooth, Sonoma was there with all my data (yes, I didn't erase my disk, all my data were store safely during the process)!

One note: before and after the installation of Sonoma in the macOS recovery screen, you will be prompted to enter your user password: don't worry, it is part of the process.

Regarding the T1 chip, Touch Bar and Touch ID work like a charm, no problem at all. You can safely upgrade from Monterey to Sonoma without losing that capability (they fixed it here if you are looking for a reference https://github.com/dortania/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/issues/1103)

After installation: At first start, OpenCore will prompt you to build and install OpenCore on your main drive, and patches for your machine are already installed by default (the video shows also this aspect). All good, my apps run normally, I did some updates via Mac App Store and brew upgrade, and my workflow seems the same as before. Prime streaming works, dual screen works, continuity works. Now I can enjoy again my ecosystem without interruption or compatibility issues with software! I will try to download Xcode and build apps for iOS 18, I will let you know if it works.

The only thing I notice is during startup where a 🚫 symbol appears for 3-4 seconds then boots in the right way.

I will keep updating this thread in case of news, or instability issues.

A donation is a must, and I will provide my contribution to this amazing team and people who are behind and still maintain this project, so glad! Thanks OpenCore!
