Having trouble installing Sequoia on 12" 2016 MacBook (MacBook9,1)

This guy was able to do it apparently very easily, but I have not yet been able to replicate it.

I made the Sequoia 15.2 installer USB (first time on my M1 Mac; then second time on an Intel Mac thinking maybe the Apple Silicon was the problem) via OCLP, installed the OCLP MacBook 9,1 EFI stuff to the USB.

Boot up from the USB on the MacBook. Choose "Install Sequoia." Follow the steps, it shows progress in the Recovery OS for a while and then reboots to the black screen with the Apple logo and the progress bar with a 30 minute countdown. Note that in this part the screen resolution is really tiny (the Apple logo and progress bar are super small; I assume cuz of the lack of proper drivers at this stage).

After the countdown ends, the Mac reboots…but back into the Recovery USB. So I then have to reboot again, choose EFI > choose "macOS Installer" > it resumes.

It prompts me to enter my password (I'm doing this as an upgrade) before letting me proceed, so I do. Shows a progress bar below my user account profile pic. Then reboots AGAIN.

I again hold opt > choose EFI > choose Macintosh HD (the "macOS Installer" is gone now). Tiny Apple logo and tiny progress bar on a black background. Progress bar shows fully loaded…and then…it just stays there…forever.

What am I doing wrong?
