mac mini 5,1 running ventura having issues with sleep/wake

a few months ago, my mac mini running ventura seemed to start having issues staying awake (i have it connected to our living room TV as a HTPC). up until i installed steam a few months ago, it would stay turned on and wake-able with just a keyboard button press at all times...but since then, it basically goes unusable after a few days to a few weeks. at some point, the keyboard will no longer wake it and i have to press the power button once to wake it (although the screen still doesn't come on), then hold the power button to get it to shut down and then turn it back on. this usually works although lately this even seems to occasionally have issues. when the machine is up and running, it seems to work fine. i haven't noticed any issues when actually using it, other than the basic slowness from it being a 12 year old computer.

anyone have any idea where to start on troubleshooting this? i've done a bunch of google searches but it's such a random problem with random symptoms i'm having a hard time finding anything. the one common thread does seem to be that it started when i installed steam, but that could be a complete coincidence...
