Requirements:
- Target external SSD
- Sequoia (or desired macOS) installer USB stick created using OCLP - this is vital
Method:
- On your mac, run the following command in terminal: sudo nvram manufacturing-enter-picker=true
- You will be prompted for your password for the above command.
- Unplug all USB drives from your mac and shut down
- Attach the installer USB stick and start your mac
- When prompted, select the EFI for your installer stick and hit return
- Next select the macOS Installer option and hit return
- Wait for menu of options to appear, then attach the external SSD, wait a few moments, select Disk Utility and continue
- Once in Disk Utility, click the drop down option from "View" and make sure Show All Devices is selected
- Select your external SSD and click Erase with Format set to APFS and Scheme set to GUID Partition Map
- Once your external SSD has been successfully erased, click Restore with "Restore from" set to your mac's drive, usually called Macintosh HD
- The restore process will take a several minutes, just be patient!
- Once the restore is complete, click the apple icon and select shut down
- Remove your installer USB stick, but leave the external SSD plugged in and hit power on
- At the boot picker, select the EFI option and then your external drive
- Once fully booted, you will find that it needs root patching - if this fails, don't panic, just restart the machine and you should find that root patching now works
- You now have a bootable clone of your mac!
From now on, you can update the external backup SSD from your mac using CCC or SuperDuper! I prefer the latter using the Smart update option.
