Guide Step-by-Step:
If your MacBook Pro has recently become sluggish with delays during login and lagging animations, these steps should help you identify and resolve performance issues.
1. Restart and Perform Basic Maintenance
- Restart your MacBook. A fresh boot can resolve many temporary issues.
- Run Disk Utility:
- Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities.
- Select your main drive and click First Aid. This will repair any minor disk errors that could affect performance.
2. Check for Background Processes Using Activity Monitor
- Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities.
- Look at the CPU and Memory tabs to check for any processes consuming excessive resources.
- Kernel_Task: If this process is using significant CPU, it could indicate a thermal issue.
- Close or quit any apps using high CPU that you don’t recognise or need.
3. Clear System Cache Files
- Cached files can build up and slow down older systems.
- Use Terminal to clear system cache:
- Restart your Mac after clearing the cache.
4. Check System Storage and Remove Unnecessary Files
- Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > Storage.
- Free up storage by removing unused files, applications, or media, as a nearly full disk can slow down macOS.
5. Resolve macOS Update Issues
- Go to System Settings > General > Software Update and try to install any pending updates.
- If an error occurs with a version mismatch, perform the following:
- Reset NVRAM/PRAM:
- Restart your Mac and hold Option + Command + P + R until you hear the startup sound twice.
- Release the keys and allow the Mac to boot normally.
- Reinstall macOS Sonoma:
- If the update mismatch persists, consider reinstalling macOS from Recovery Mode:
- Restart and hold Command + R to enter Recovery Mode.
- Choose Reinstall macOS. This will reinstall the OS without erasing your data.
- Reset NVRAM/PRAM:
6. Disable Transparency and Motion Effects (Optional)
- Reducing graphical demands can improve performance on older hardware.
- Go to System Settings > Accessibility > Display:
- Enable Reduce Transparency and Reduce Motion to lessen graphical load.
7. Run Apple Diagnostics
- Restart your Mac while holding D to enter Apple Diagnostics.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to check for any hardware issues, especially related to your GPU, which may be causing rendering delays.
8. Check for Login Items and Background Apps
- Go to System Settings > General > Login Items.
- Remove any unnecessary startup items that could be slowing down the initial boot.
9. Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)
- For MacBook Pros without a removable battery:
- Shut down your MacBook.
- Press Shift + Control + Option on the left side and the Power button at the same time.
- Hold for 10 seconds, then release all keys and restart.
After completing these steps, your MacBook should show improved performance. Reinstalling macOS will resolve the update mismatch if simpler methods don’t work. Let me know if you encounter further issues!
My 2013 macbook pro has been working great for nearly six months, but for the last week, It's been painful to use when I turn it on (from sleep/lock screen) becuase each character of my login password takes a few seconds to populate after I type it.
Before it was pretty smooth changing windows, but now it renders a single frame before jumping to the next application.
Also, my backgrounds don't load in on my home page, in Gmail, and highlighting just blacks out text...
The only thing I've noticed is OpenCore says there is an update, but when I try to install it, there is a version mismatch. Any help would be appriciated.
