Salutations Reddit,
I just wanted to share my experience using OCLP on my Mac Pro 6,1. To no surprise, the 6,1 has a bit of a cult following with its design and aesthetic (thermals be damned). Ive had my base unit since launch and have since added 64gb of RAM, 10 core CPU, and have re-applied thermal paste to the D300 GPUs.
Last week I 'upgraded' to Sequoia via OCLP and it worked with great success. However, there were several graphical elements that were really inconvenient. Spotify would turn red on launch and would cause the computer to freeze for a moment. Google Chrome wouldnt work without a handy .py script. The menu bar at the top of the computer would flash red. My fan utility would spin up to max when 'sleeping' (particularly alarming).
There were several other issues as well but I wanted to make this post to share with other Mac Pro 6,1 users that unfortunately OCLP or at least Sequoia is not the path forward. Which is sad to say because all things considered this machine still operates amazing in 2024 (im typing this post on it right now in Monterey). Which has led me to now purchasing a new M4 Macbook Pro as its replacement (I like to have the option of docked and portable).
It has been a good ride with the 6,1 over this past decade and I suspect I can still squeeze another year or maybe two out of Monterey. I hope that this post will save some folks time as the process of upgrading with OCLP and restoring back to Monterey was a bit of a journey in and of itself.
