Hi everyone, I’d like your opinion on building a Hackintosh to replace my Mac M1 with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.
Honestly, the new M4s don’t seem to have a huge performance improvement over the M3, so I don’t really see the point in getting either an M3 or M4, especially considering the price and the limitations. I would need to go for a Mac Studio rather than a MacBook, which would mean stepping up to an M2 Ultra/Max. For this reason, I’m considering building a Hackintosh with dual Xeon E5-2686v4 CPUs, 128GB RAM, and an AMD GPU.
Let me explain my use case so you can help me with the setup: I primarily develop apps in Flutter, which means I need a lot of iOS emulators to test how the app performs on different devices. I also use many server control apps, APIs, etc., and have numerous Firefox tabs open for research, emails, calls, etc. This would be the main task, which is why I’m aiming for plenty of cores and RAM. My secondary use case is some 3D modeling and rendering in Fusion and Blender.
As I mentioned, my plan is to build a Hackintosh with dual Xeons and lots of RAM to save money and have more flexibility for multitasking. The new M4s start at 16GB, which would make it necessary for me to go up to at least 24GB due to the AI features Apple will be adding. Also, the M4 configuration I’d need would be over 2K, so let me know what you think.
