Installing New OS from internal HD

Hey friends, new here, I just didn't want to mess anything up. I am currently on my 2011 MacBook Pro with 8GB Ram and integrally SSD, its running great but I wanted to get it updated to a newer OS. So of course I have downloaded and built Sequoia on a USB stick, however I'm using a Kanex DisplayPort USB dongle since the two USB inputs on this MacBook are fried. So I am not sure if this is going to work. Due to how it powers up and runs, I didn't see the openlegacy patch when I went to boot it from the drive, it was just my normal hard drive and a backup boot that showed up. So I think I have installed the Sequoia OS on my internal hard drive, as its showing up in my launch pad with the apps. Wondering if I can run this install, or if I could get the patcher on to an SD card. Let me know how to proceed, wanted to get this Mac running my home automation and likely run home bridge on it, but I need to get a newer OS to do that. Thanks for any help in advance.
