Background: We were playing around with our X99 hackintosh these days and someone found a 6950X from his backyard so tossed it into the machine to see how it performs compared to our daily Xeon.
We did all overclock process using Windows + OCCT/Prime 95 and the final setting is all 10 cores at 4.0GHz with 0.1GHz clock down during AVX load. The heat is manageable, Prime 95 peak temp is 98 degree C. Intel Speed Step and C states are all on.
Then we ran CBr23 in MacOS, the CPU only got <10K score which is what we see from high spec Macbook Pro 16,1.
What we found is MacOS constantly requesting CPU to clock down to 2.0GHz during CBr23 testing. We tried to disable all CPU power saving features (basically forcing cores to run at 3.9GHz) and we got like ~12K in CBr23. Intel Power Gadget still suggests MacOS was requesting some wired frequency like 2.68GHz during testing, of course such request were kindly rejected by BIOS.
Is there any way of stopping MacOS from doing such *** stuff? Why it is trying to down clock the CPU?
Due to the fact that we are using a repurposed server cooler, disabling all CPU power saving features results in some high noise coming from the hack, which is pretty annoying. Should we just upgrade the cooler and call it a day?
