Installing iMovie on Monterey (10.3.3/10.3.8) and using apple support page to download official update files

I hope I don't get bullied or banned for posting this here. This is a long read so enjoy!

I recently bought a used MacBook pro 13' mid 2010 (Macbook 7.1 or sth). Reason I bought it is the firewire 800 port it has on the side because I want to use it for transferring videos from a Sony mini dv camcorder. I also want to mention this is my first contact with macOS and macs in general.

In order to transfer files from camera to mac I need iMovie and I thought this wouldn't be a problem. So this are all the things I tried.

  • First I tried to download iMovie straight from the appstore and got promptly reminded that my mac is old as sh*t and that iMovie runs on macOS 13.5 or newer.

I don't even know how and why it's running macOS Monterey v12.7.6 and asking me to update to Sonoma when everywhere I look I see that mid 2010 macbooks support High Sierra as the latest update. Moving on.

  • I tried to download iMovie 10.1.12 from a shady website. Installed it and after that couldn't even locate the app on the computer after it was done installing.
  • I tried the appstore updates tab method. Never owned any mac prior so I don't have iMovie in my updates tab. Tried to download to iphone and logging out multiple times. No success.
  • Found a video on downloading and installing iMovie 9.0.9/9.0.8 straight from apple's website. Followed it and installed iMovie. Found out shortly that this version in too old for Monterey. In the search for the 9.0.9 installer I also found the 10.1.12 version and it too was to old for my mac.

After searching on the web I found out that the only working versions (that I know of) are 10.3.3. and 10.3.8. I also found out that if you change the numbers on the apple iMovie 9.0.9 download page you get redirected to other official download links.

For example:

this link https://support.apple.com/en-us/106419 will take you to the iMovie 9.0.9 download page.

change the last number (9) to 1 https://support.apple.com/en-us/106411 and you get the macOS Sierra 10.12.1 update download page

I played around and searched a little bit and I think it would be possible to find all updates and versions of official apps just by changing these numbers. Whether this is legal I have no idea but I don't know why it shouldn't be besides the fact that these pages aren't easily accessible without a table of these number codes explaining what code is for what download.

Maybe there already is an array of all these codes on the web and I just hadn't found it yet but together I think we can figure something out.

Thanks in advance! I reply in time and when I have time.
