Hey everyone!
For over a year I'm rocking NUC8i7HVK with i7-8809G and RX Vega M GH with 32G RAM but device computer is not mine and I need to return it soon. It serves me very well. I'd say I don't lack performance and its good fit for me.
I am considering couple of possible solutions but I need an opinion on them. I do use windows from time to time but only for weird things that macOS could not run.
I do some casual gaming (if you count OldSchool Runescape as a game), coding and running docker containers.
Thats what I've took into consideration:
- Mac Mini M2 with AT LEAST 16GB of RAM (preferably 24) but price tag on them is not ideal (1,1-1,5k USD) and I'm stuck with macOS without possibility to bootcamp (yea I know parallel exists)
- Getting used NUC8I7HVK (around 250 bucks) but that machine is loud af when put under stress
- Building hack PC from scratch. I'm considering 14th gen i5 with 32GB RAM and some used RX580 or newer, with my possibilities on CPU discounts I could be ending building it for around 700 bucks, I've already have storage and bcm94360ng.
- Getting used 8-10th gen USFF machine (NUC or even a ChromeBox). A little bit harder to setup but small and efficient. Price varies a lot so it can be 150 to 500 bucks
I do need an advice what should I choose or avoid with newer hardware. My last "full" PC hack was running skylake and pascal gpu. I don't consider current NUC as full fetched hack as full EFI was taken from OSY Github who made an excellent job on fully supporting that machine. Also I may be wrong but Ryzen based hacks does have problem with docker?
