I successfully installed Sonoma on my iMac and while it's 95% usable, that extra 5% of bugginess is making me think I might need to downgrade (general slowness/lag, random messages and mail crashes, iMovie and photos seem to have issues displaying videos and photos respectively...). Rather than going OS by OS I thought I'd throw it out to Reddit to see if a certain OS might be a recommended fit.
My iMac is late 2009 27"; 2.8 gHz Quad Core Intel Core i7; AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB; 32 GB memory; HDD and optical drive both swapped out for SSDs
