Just finished my low budget MacBook challenge

Hi guys,

I thought of getting a MacBook for office and web tasks on the couch and didn’t want to spend much money since I actual have a quite good gaming pc. So I ended up with an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13” i5 with hdd and only 4gb of ram. I installed Ventura on it and as you can guess it was very slow, so I almost thought it’s not worth it. But then I decided to buy 16gb ddr3l ram and a 128gb from alibaba together for 30€, so all in all with a new charger I paid 70€. After installing the upgrades and installing Ventura I immediately stressed the MacBook with installing multiple apps, cloud sync, FileVault, listening to music via YouTube and browsing the web. I am actually surprised about how well it performs, sometimes it lags shortly but it was totally usable while being stressed. The fan was on high almost all the time and the temps are pretty high but it was still ok and think after renewing the thermal paste it will be better, also I will not use it like this all the time.

So the message of this post is that if you need a cheap laptop for office and web tasks you can easily go for an old MacBook for cheap as long as you’re capable of upgrading it (which is really not that hard). I’m really happy I did this since I love the old design and I saved some money which I would’ve spent for no serious reason.

Ps: everything is working out of the box with open core besides screensaver (just a black screen).
