Won’t boot with external HD connected.

Just updated to Sonoma, but it won’t boot with an external thunderbolt drive connected. But I’ve never been able to mount it while running the hackintosh - always had to boot with drive connected in order to read the hard drive. Any ideas? I have an identical hackintosh where this process worked fine with no issues though
