This is for anyone you need to create a USB Install drive to recover an old Mac. I highly recommend you have one ready before you try things out like OPCL or installing a new SSD, etc.
Yes, there’s a Apple support page describing the process (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/101578) and a download page for MacOS installers (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/102662). Well, really…
For MacOS >= High Sierra yes, easy to follow. For anything earlier, not really. Apple changed the way the installer is Organise da while ago. It comes now in form of a .dmg and does not contain an Installer.app any-longer. With this Apple improved the way the install process works for old Mac models. But what if you already have bricked your old Mac. If you thing you can just use a modern Mac to create an install drive you are mistaken. You open the .dmg and click the installer package and… … get an error message and there’s no way to extract an installer app you can use to create a installer drive. Also Parallels Desktop can’t use the .dmg image to create a VM (no bootable system found). I learned it the hard way. After searching a couple days I found the following procedure which a) creates a bootable drive and b) creates an Installer which would allow to create a VM in Parallels
