FaceTime/iMessage - Do they work with ethernet only?

Hi - I have an incompatible wifi card and can only connect through my ethernet cable. Everything works...apple store, subscriptions, etc except Facetime/iMessage

I'm hearing that they don't work if you only have ethernet (even if it's built in) and you have to get your WIFI Working somehow. Would getting a USB WIFI fix it? Laptop btw
