Guide:
If you're looking to upgrade your 2013 iMac to macOS Big Sur while preserving all your old software and files, there are a few steps you can take to ensure a smooth transition. Here's how you can proceed:
1. Backup Your Data:
Time Machine Backup:
- Ensure that you have a recent Time Machine backup that includes all your important files, applications, and system settings.
2. Prepare for the Upgrade:
Check Compatibility:
- Verify that your iMac meets the minimum system requirements for macOS Big Sur.
- Check compatibility of your existing software with macOS Big Sur. Some older applications may not be compatible and may require updates or replacements.
3. Upgrade Using OCLP:
Install macOS Big Sur:
- Download the macOS Big Sur installer from the App Store.
- Create a bootable USB installer using OCLP and the macOS Big Sur installer app.
- Boot your iMac from the USB installer and proceed with the installation of macOS Big Sur.
Upgrade Option:
- During the installation process, you will reach a step where you can choose the installation disk. Select the disk where your current macOS installation is located (usually named "Macintosh HD").
Installation Settings:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Choose the option to upgrade macOS rather than performing a clean installation.
4. Restore from Time Machine Backup:
Migration Assistant:
- After successfully upgrading to macOS Big Sur, set up your iMac and go through the initial setup process.
- When prompted, choose to transfer data from a Time Machine backup using the Migration Assistant.
Select Backup:
- Connect your Time Machine backup drive to your iMac.
- Select the Time Machine backup from which you want to restore your data.
Restore Process:
- Follow the prompts to select the data you want to restore, including your applications, files, and settings.
- Start the restoration process and wait for it to complete.
5. Verify Software and Data:
Check Applications:
- Once the restoration process is finished, verify that all your old software, including Adobe CS6 and music applications, are properly installed and functioning on macOS Big Sur.
Test Files:
- Ensure that all your files and documents have been successfully transferred and are accessible on macOS Big Sur.
Conclusion:
By following these steps, you can upgrade your 2013 iMac to macOS Big Sur while retaining all your old software and files. The key is to have a thorough backup of your data using Time Machine and to use the Migration Assistant to transfer your data seamlessly to the new macOS installation. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of the latest macOS version without losing any of your important software or files.
Hello, I have a 2013 iMac with a bunch of music software on it. I want to upgrade to a later os, Big Sur. I understand that I can do this with the OCLP, however I want to keep all the old software on it.
do I have to wipe the system completely or is their an upgrade path where I keep everything that’s installed and all my files?
I do have a Time Machine with everything (all software, license, and files.) I have adobe cs6 and some old music software on it.
