Troubleshooting Sonoma 14.3 Issues on MacBook Pro Retina 2013 Post OCLP Upgrade

Guide:

If you've recently upgraded your Early 2013 MacBook Pro Retina to Sonoma 14.3 using OCLP and are experiencing various issues, here's a troubleshooting guide to help you identify and potentially resolve the problems:

  1. Safari Rendering Issues:

    • If Safari is displaying white space or failing to render certain websites correctly, try clearing the browser cache and cookies.
    • Check for any Safari extensions or plugins that might be causing conflicts. Disable or remove them temporarily to see if it resolves the rendering issues.
    • Update Safari to the latest version available in the App Store to ensure compatibility with Sonoma 14.3.
  2. Wallpaper Goes Black:

    • This issue might be related to graphics drivers or system settings. Try resetting the PRAM (Parameter RAM) on your MacBook Pro by restarting and holding down Command + Option + P + R until you hear the startup chime twice.
    • Check the Energy Saver settings in System Preferences to ensure that automatic graphics switching is enabled if your MacBook Pro has dual graphics processors.
  3. Photoshop Window Display Issue:

    • The issue with Photoshop might be related to graphics driver compatibility or memory management. Try updating Photoshop to the latest version available from Adobe's website.
    • If the problem persists, consider reinstalling Photoshop or resetting its preferences by holding down Command + Option + Shift while launching the application.
  4. SpeedTest App Flashing and Exiting:

    • This issue could be caused by compatibility issues with Sonoma 14.3. Check for updates to the SpeedTest app in the App Store or contact the app developer for assistance.
    • Alternatively, try using a different network speed testing tool to see if the issue persists.
  5. Blank Dock Icons:

    • The disappearance of dock icons could be related to system preferences or application settings. Try restarting your MacBook Pro to see if the icons reappear.
    • If the issue persists, check the System Preferences > Dock settings to ensure that the option to show recent applications in the Dock is enabled.
  6. General Performance and Stability:

    • If you're experiencing overall performance issues or system instability, consider running disk utility to check for and repair any disk errors.
    • Review the system logs in the Console application for any error messages or warnings related to specific applications or system components.
  7. Consider Reverting or Reinstalling:

    • If troubleshooting individual issues doesn't resolve the overall problems, consider reverting to your previous macOS version or performing a clean reinstall of Sonoma 14.3 using a different installation method.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you can diagnose and potentially resolve the various issues you're experiencing on your MacBook Pro Retina 2013 after upgrading to Sonoma 14.3 using OCLP.

Using erased system disk and OCLP 1.3 to go straight Sonoma 14.3 - Multiple Symptoms

I have what I would best describe as a OCLP created Sonoma 14.3 system with A LOT of issues. I’ve described as many of them as I can below but first I give some detailed background on the laptop in question. My starting question is: Should I be viewing/treating these issues as a whole bunch of different Sonoma 14.3 and app issues or could there possibly be something wrong with my OCLP upgrade process that is the culprit behind all these issues?

BACKGROUND:

Providing as much detail as I can. Scroll down to SYMPTOMS if you just want to see my current problems. I have an Early 2013 MacBook Pro Retina with 16GB memory and a 500GB SSD (MacBookPro 10,1 I think). It is 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 with two graphics processors (I guess) called NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB -and- Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB (from system settings)

I’ve personally been using this laptop for a decade in different types of work. Over the years it was upgraded to Catalina (most recent possible) and continued to meet most of my needs. However, my wife got a newer iMac running Sonoma (14.2.1 right now) and I could see a number of improvements I lusted after. So I researched OpenCore Legacy Patcher over a couple of months before jumping onboard. In those couple of months I cleaned my system up, created a clean Time Machine backup and consolidated all my files onto my iCloud Drive. I had a slow period where I could afford to be with my system for a few days and jumped.

My first attempts to upgrade failed for a variety of issues. 16GB USB-Flash was not enough, I needed 32GB, and attempting to upgrade my system (as opposed to zeroing my internal SSD first) failed miserably. I attributed it to just too many old ancient applications and widgets (from warning msgs during the initial Sonoma post-update startup.) I basically “bricked” my system and needed to take an alternate route to recover. I zeroed by internal SSD and started the Sonoma (14.3) install process again.

Last point, during all these upgrade attempts I struggled finding a coherent, easy to follow set of instructions. I’ve been in computer software support for 40+ years. I’ve owned and hacked Macintosh systems since 1986. I’ve supported a dozen other operating systems, including Unix, clustered Unix, every version of MacOS X/v10 and dealt with bare-metal, bricked systems, and boot block and BIOS related issues throughout my career. But I still felt the need for a coherent simple set of step-by-step instructions on the OpenCore process, installers, etc because for the last 10 years (using this MacOS laptop without issues) I’ve fallen behind in all the magic going on under the covers associated with MacOS, boot partitions, GUID formatting, EFI, etc, etc. I was very disappointed with the OCLP instructions themselves but I could tell that a lot of the reasons what I saw on my screen didn’t match those directions was because I was using the latest OCLP 1.3 and macOS Sonoma 14.3 … which were both released in just the last 3-4 months. So I accepted all that but found I had to rely a lot on 3rd party individuals and websites that created their own step-by-step instructions. While I was consulting with multiple sets of instructions, I would say I primarily performed the final successful update using these websites instructions:

SYMPTOMS:

My first hints that something was not kosher occurred within the first half-hour. My goal for first-day after upgrade was to add the basic tools, utilities, and applications I use. FWIW, those key tools for me are: Microsoft 365, Adobe Photoshop, Canva, SpeedTest (by Ookla), Chrome Browser. As I continued to use Sonoma to install these tools I see, and continue to see, a number of issues. They seem random and unrelated to me but maybe more experienced folks will see a pattern and offer some hints. I don’t know if I’m suffering from a unique set of HW issues (tied to Early 2013 MacBook Pro Retina) and OCLP or maybe these are Sonoma related issues (though that is hard to believe).

In random order, not the order I encountered them

  • Safari: I go to websites I’ve been visiting for years and: A) they may initially render visually normal and correct looking but B) as I scroll down the page it is just white-space. C) I immediately go to Chrome, to the same page, everything behaves normally. This is not every website, but all the ones important ones. D) I’ve been to some pages where everything looks normal but clickable buttons, icon or text likes don’t even turn the mouse into a pointing finger. Other sites work fine. I know this sounds insane but after 3-4 days I cannot pinpoint or describe a “type of page” that causes this. Immediately going to test the same URL with Chrome and it works absolutely fine.
  • Have seen the wallpaper go to black. Logging out, or rebooting (can’t remember which) corrects the problem.
  • I’ve noticed Safari stalling in that its progress bar is showing half down and never completes. How could Safari be behaving slow to access, download and render a site that Chrome does in a flash. Does Chrome use some graphic’s API that is very different from what Safari uses?
  • I was using Photoshop 2024 and I suddenly see a hole in the window where the graphic file I was working on was just minutes earlier. Not initially, but after using Photoshop for maybe 10 or 15 minutes. I can move the window around and see what’s behind the square where the graphic image should be.
  • The SpeedTest app, which I normally access from the MaOS menu bar, launches, then flashes its initial screen for 1 second, then exits. No error msg, just flashes and disappears. Same app is fine on my wife’s Sonoma 14.2.1.
  • Just today (5 days after upgrade) I suddenly see that about 8 of the 15 or so dock icons have gone blank. They are still there as their name appears above when you hover and clicking them launches the app.

Should I be treating these as a whole bunch of different Sonoma 14.3 issues or could there possibly be something in my OCLP upgrade that is the culprit?
