Partitioning SSD for Dual Boot: Installing Windows 11 alongside Mac Ventura

Since you want to install Windows 11 on the same SSD as your existing Mac Ventura installation, you'll need to create a separate partition for Windows without affecting your current macOS setup. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Open Disk Utility: Launch Disk Utility from the Applications folder or by searching for it using Spotlight.

  2. Select Your SSD: In Disk Utility, locate and select your SSD from the list of available disks on the left-hand side. It should be listed as "disk0."

  3. Add a New Partition: Click on the "+" button in the Disk Utility toolbar to add a new partition to your SSD.

  4. Choose Partition Type: When prompted, select "Partition" as the option. This will allow you to divide the container's storage into separate partitions.

  5. Adjust Partition Size: Drag the partition separator to adjust the size of the new partition according to your needs. This partition will be used for Windows 11, so allocate enough space for the Windows installation.

  6. Format the Partition: Under "Format," choose "ExFAT" or "MS-DOS (FAT)" as the format for the new partition. This format is compatible with Windows installations.

  7. Name the Partition: Give the new partition a descriptive name, such as "Windows," so you can easily identify it during the Windows installation process.

  8. Apply Changes: Once you've configured the new partition settings, click on the "Apply" button to create the partition. Disk Utility will warn you that this operation will modify the partition map. Confirm the action by clicking "Partition" when prompted.

  9. Verify Partition Creation: After Disk Utility finishes partitioning your SSD, you should see the new "Windows" partition listed alongside your existing macOS partitions.

Now, you can proceed with installing Windows 11 on the newly created partition using the Windows installation media. During the Windows installation process, choose the "Windows" partition as the destination for the Windows installation.

Remember to back up your important data before partitioning the SSD and installing Windows to avoid any data loss. Additionally, it's recommended to create a bootable macOS installer USB drive using macOS Recovery or the macOS installer app before proceeding with the Windows installation. This will allow you to restore your macOS installation if anything goes wrong during the process.

Install windows 11 on same SSD as Mac Ventura - How to partition the SSD?

Hi, I am about to install Windows 11 on my internal SSD that currently has Mac Ventura. That disk looks like this:

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *512.1 GB disk0

1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1

2: Apple_APFS Container disk1 511.9 GB disk0s2

And related to the same SSD diskutil shows

/dev/disk1 (synthesized):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: APFS Container Scheme - +511.9 GB disk1

Physical Store disk0s2

1: APFS Volume Ventura - Data 223.0 GB disk1s1

2: APFS Volume Preboot 1.9 GB disk1s2

3: APFS Volume Recovery 1.2 GB disk1s3

4: APFS Volume Ventura 9.3 GB disk1s4

5: APFS Snapshot com.apple.os.update-... 9.3 GB disk1s4s1

6: APFS Volume VM 1.1 GB disk1s6

I see that I should create new partition for Windows and that it should be APFS or Mac Extended Journaled. In my case I plan on APFS.

When I hit the add partition button in Disk Utility, I get this message:

"Do you want to add a volume to the APFS container or do you want to divide the container’s storage into separate partitions?"

What should I do?

thanks
