Black screen on laptop boot, except it's not a black screen but the backlight off

HP Laptop with a 10th gen Ice Lake i7-1065G7 CPU, MacBookAir9,1 SMBIOS. macOS Sonoma 14.2.1.

I only got this laptop last month, so it's still wip. This laptop boots and the screen is black for a long time, until the login screen appears. Or so I thought.

It turns out the laptop boots no problem and the screen isn't blank/black. The backlight is just off, until something times out (seemingly the screensaver kicking in) and I can see what's on the screen.

I was ready to shrug this off as an inexplicably slow boot, except it's not. It seems like I should be able to fix this. Right now, I'm booting verbose with debug, so there's a long scroll of text during boot. This shows up normally. The screen goes blank (black) where you'd except the Apple logo to show up. The Apple logo is there, just barely visible. Then then password/login screen shows up, but it's barely visible, so for the past few weeks, I thought it was a black screen. I was today-year-old to find out I could enter my password and login. I just had to wait for the backlight to turn on.

Has anyone seen anything like this? A true black screen and/or no video seems to be a common ailment trying to install macOS on a PC.

The additional stumper is that using the F-key to adjust backlight level doesn't work while the screen is black. It seems to be something deep at the driver/system level.

What can I do so I don't have to wait five minutes to use my computer?
