Hi :)
I was Ryzentoshing an old R7 1700 on a B450 mobo. I have it booting, but my old Adobe CS6 doesn't want to work with the 1700, even with the OpenCore-referenced patches. Also other things won't work, like VMware, which I actually use a lot.
So I was thinking of using this machine as a Linux box instead. I looked for prices on the old i7 8700B-based Mac mini that could be upgraded with 64 GB of memory, but they're pretty expensive. I then noticed that prices on comparable hardware (to the Mac mini) are very low right now, with e.g. the Core i5-10600KF going for about $80 locally. I also had the mentioned Mac mini on my old workplace, and then fans get pretty annoying when it's at full load, so a more silent machine would be nice.
So I'm thinking instead of getting new Intel-based hardware, so that virtualization, CS6, and anything else I've yet to notice is broken because of AMD will work. I already have a compatible GPU, so I just need a new mobo, CPU, and memory. I'm now wondering if you guys have good or bad experiences with certain CPUs or chipsets wrt Hackintoshes? The Dortania guide seems to say that all Intel Core CPUs are supported, but still...
If it matters, I'd like to run High Sierra. I'm not sure if there are Intel CPU versions that are unsupported by older macOSes, so that that might matter. I thinking that when Dortania mentions all Core CPUs being supported, it is always thinking in the context of the latest version of macOS.
Does it matter if the CPU has an iGPU or not? That is, would it be preferable to get an F version without an iGPU?
If the CPU has an iGPU, are there versions where the iGPU is properly working with macOS (10.13 preferably), so that I could ditch the Radeon GPU?
Are there motherboard chipsets to prefer or avoid? E.g. the mentioned i5 above could be paired with a cheap H510 motherboard.
Thank you :)
