Troubleshooting macOS Catalina Installer Boot Failure

Guide:

If you're encountering issues reaching the installer page for macOS Catalina despite successful installations of previous macOS versions like High Sierra or Mojave, follow these troubleshooting steps to address the problem:

1. Verify USB Installer Integrity:

  • Ensure that your macOS Catalina installer USB drive is created correctly using a genuine macOS Catalina image and tools like createinstallmedia or gibMacOS.
  • Double-check that the USB drive is formatted appropriately (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS) and has the necessary EFI partition for booting.

2. USB Port and Drive Compatibility:

  • Test different USB ports on your computer to rule out any compatibility issues with specific ports.
  • Try using a different USB drive if possible, as some drives may not be compatible with macOS booting requirements.

3. Boot Flags and Bootloader Configuration:

  • Review the boot flags you've added, such as npci=0x3000, and experiment with alternative flags or combinations to see if they resolve the booting issue.
  • Check your bootloader configuration (e.g., OpenCore or Clover) and ensure that it is set up correctly for macOS Catalina. Verify that necessary ACPI patches, kexts, and drivers are configured appropriately.

4. Verbose Mode Analysis:

  • Analyze the verbose mode output to identify any specific error messages or points of failure during the boot process.
  • Look for any error messages related to kernel panic, ACPI issues, or disk I/O errors, which could provide clues to the underlying problem.

5. BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Access your computer's BIOS or UEFI settings and ensure that it is configured correctly for Hackintosh installation.
  • Check for settings related to virtualization (VT-x), Secure Boot, SATA mode (AHCI), and any other relevant options. Make necessary adjustments as per Hackintosh installation requirements.

6. Hardware Compatibility:

  • Verify that your computer's hardware components, including CPU, GPU, and motherboard, are compatible with macOS Catalina. Consult Hackintosh compatibility lists and forums for guidance on specific hardware compatibility issues.

7. Community Support and Troubleshooting:

  • Seek assistance from online communities and forums dedicated to Hackintosh, such as Reddit's r/Hackintosh or InsanelyMac forums. Provide detailed information about your hardware configuration and troubleshooting steps taken for more targeted assistance.

By following these troubleshooting steps and leveraging community support from Hackintosh forums, you can diagnose and address the boot failure issue to successfully reach the installer page for macOS Catalina on your system.

Unable to Reach Installer
I'm unable to reach the installer page for macOS Catalina. I have not had this issue for High Sierra, or Mojave. I have tried with both a USB 2.0 and 3.0 drive, as well as 2.0, and 3.0 ports. Both interchangeably, and both with no luck. My installer USB is a vanilla UniBeast. The only additional boot flag I've added is npci=0x3000. Verbose mode halts at this:
