I've got an assortment of parts leftover from upgrading various PCs around the house and figured a Hackintosh would be a good use for them, but I will need to buy a motherboard as that is the component I'm missing. Current parts list:
- CPU: Intel i7-10700KF
- GPU: AMD Radeon MSi RX 5700 XT Mech OC
- RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Ballistix DDR4-3200 w/XMP (can upgrade to 32GB if necessary)
- PSU: Cooler Master MWE Gold 750 v2
- Storage: m.2 NVMe - Crucial P5 1TB (also have a Samsung 960 EVO 1TB if the Crucial is a problem)
- Mobo: TBD
- Case: TBD
Context: Machine will be occasional use, probably some OSX and iOS coding and light video editing/ processing work (so it's important the hardware encoders and decoders for the AMD work properly). I'd prefer the onboard networking (GIG-E and WiFi) to work under MacOS. I don't anticipate installing Windows on this machine unless it's required to get MacOS working. RE: Overclocking, it would be a nice-to-have, but not imperative, so if the H- or B-series chipset mobos work better, that's fine. Form factor isn't super important; mini-ATX would be ideal, but not critical.
From what I've found searching various resources, I should be good to go with these components, but as far as Motherboard compatibility, I've seen conflicting information. While the Dortania compatibility list says *all* motherboards are supported if the CPU is, other resources lead me to believe that getting OC and MacOS up and running is easier on some boards than others.
Any guidance on Mobos, either in terms of manufacturer or chipset? I found something on www.tonymacx86.com that said the Z490 chipset was preferred for the 10th gen, but that thread is nearly three years old. My CPU, GPU, and NVMe are all PCI 3.0, so I definitely don't need the Z590 for PCIe 4.0.
The cheapest new Z490 board is the NZXT N7 at ~$170, but don't mind spending more for a Gigabyte, MSi, ASUS, etc. if setup is easier.
Thanks in advance... I haven't built a Hackintosh in over a decade, so I feel like I'm a n00b all over again.
