It seems you're experiencing issues with the discrete GPU in your MacBook Pro 11,3 after attempting to install root patches using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP). The problem with "GeForce.kext" suggests that there's an incompatibility or corruption with the graphics drivers. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot:
Title: Resolving Discrete GPU Stuck Issues on MBP 11,3 with Ventura
Step 1: Boot into Safe Mode
- Start your MacBook Pro while holding down the Shift key to boot into Safe Mode.
- Safe Mode bypasses certain extensions and can help in diagnosing the issue.
Step 2: Verify File System Integrity
- Once in Safe Mode, open Disk Utility and run First Aid
on your boot volume to check for and repair any file system issues that could be affecting the boot process.
Step 3: Clear System Caches
- In Safe Mode, open Terminal and execute the following commands to clear system caches, which can sometimes resolve issues with kexts:
- Restart your MacBook Pro after clearing the caches to see if the issue is resolved.
Step 4: Reinstall macOS Ventura
- If Safe Mode and clearing caches don't fix the issue, consider reinstalling macOS Ventura. You can do this by booting into Recovery Mode (holding Command + R at startup) and choosing "Reinstall macOS" from the utilities.
- This will reinstall the operating system without erasing your data.
Step 5: Reset NVRAM and SMC
- Reset the NVRAM (Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory) by restarting your MacBook Pro and holding down Command + Option + P + R until you hear the startup chime twice.
- Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) following Apple's guidelines for your specific MacBook Pro model.
Step 6: Review OpenCore Configuration
- If you have access to another Mac or a bootable macOS system, review your OpenCore configuration on the EFI partition. Make sure it's set up correctly according to the OCLP guide for your specific model.
- Ensure that the OpenCore configuration does not contain any unnecessary or conflicting kext entries.
Step 7: Avoid Root Patches
- If the root patches are causing issues, you may want to avoid applying them for now. It’s possible that the patches are not fully compatible with your system or are conflicting with the existing drivers, especially those related to the discrete GPU.
Step 8: Contact OCLP Support
- Reach out to the OpenCore Legacy Patcher community for support. They may have insights into the issue with the GeForce.kext on your specific model after the Ventura update.
- Provide them with as much detail as possible about the issue and any error messages you've encountered.
Step 9: Monitor GPU Usage
- Once you have your system booting correctly again, monitor the GPU usage to see if the discrete GPU is being engaged appropriately.
- Use Activity Monitor or a third-party tool to keep an eye on the GPU performance and to check if the discrete GPU is active when it shouldn't be.
Step 10: Software Updates and Patches
- Keep an eye out for any software updates or patches from Apple
or the OCLP team that may address the issue with the discrete GPU in future releases.
Step 11: Alternative Solutions
- If the issue persists and is specifically related to the discrete GPU, look into software solutions that can force the use of the integrated GPU if it suits your usage needs. Tools like gfxCardStatus may allow you to switch to integrated graphics, although compatibility with Ventura may vary.
Step 12: Hardware Check
- As a last resort, if the system remains slow and the discrete GPU seems to be the problem, consider taking your MacBook Pro to a certified Apple technician to check for potential hardware issues with the GPU.
Final Notes:
- While troubleshooting, document each step you take and any changes made so you can revert them if necessary.
- Always ensure your data is backed up before attempting any fixes that might risk user data.
MBP 11,3 stuck on discrete graphics
I searched and didn't see anything quite like this, since i have been able to get it to boot now.
I used OCLP to upgrade my MBP 11,3 to Ventura yesterday. As of this morning things were working fine.
This afternoon, I tried installing the root patches. After that it wouldn't finish booting. I eventually got it to boot by clearing out the kexts in the Extensions folder. it seems the one that is having issues in terms of boot is "GeForce.kext" I've tried re-installing the patches several times, but it never worked until i delete GeForce.kext.
Additionally when i get it to boot it is stuck on the discreet gpu and the whole computer is super slow. For example, typing this out i'm about 2 words ahead of the cursor.
Any advice? TIA
