Troubleshooting Guide for Fan, Overheating, and Battery Drain on MacBook Pro 2015 Running macOS Sonoma 14.2
Target Audience: MacBook Pro users, particularly those familiar with using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) for macOS upgrades.
Check Activity Monitor:
- Open Activity Monitor to identify any processes consuming high CPU or memory resources. This can often be the cause of overheating and fan issues.
Reset SMC (System Management Controller):
- Shut down your MacBook Pro.
- Hold Shift + Control + Option and the power button for 10 seconds, then release all keys.
- Turn on your MacBook. This can help resolve issues related to power, battery, and thermal management.
Ensure Proper Ventilation:
- Make sure your MacBook Pro has adequate ventilation. Overheating can occur if air vents are blocked.
Update OCLP and Kexts:
- Ensure you have the latest version of OpenCore Legacy Patcher.
- Update all necessary kexts (kernel extensions). Outdated kexts can cause compatibility issues with new OS versions.
Monitor Battery Health:
- Check your battery health in System Preferences → Energy Saver → Battery Health.
- Consider replacing the battery if its condition is poor.
Check for macOS Updates:
- Sometimes, issues are resolved in subsequent minor updates. Ensure you have the latest updates for macOS Sonoma.
Inspect Hardware:
- If the issue persists, consider having your MacBook Pro's hardware inspected, especially the fans and thermal paste, which may need replacement.
Power Management Settings:
- Review your power settings in System Preferences. Adjust settings for better battery life, like reducing screen brightness and setting a shorter time before the display turns off.
Safe Mode Diagnostic:
- Boot into Safe Mode (hold Shift during startup) to diagnose issues caused by third-party software.
Create a New User Account for Testing:
- Issues might be specific to your user account. Test by creating a new user account to see if the problems persist.
Feedback and Further Assistance:
- Share your experiences and any additional steps that helped resolve the issue for the benefit of the community.

A few days ago I downloaded MacOS Sonoma 14.2 on my MBP 2015 using OCLP. At first everything seemed to be running extremely well (access to the new update features, increased app response speeds, and more.). Unfortunately, after testing my MBP for a few days I observed that my fans are constantly running at full speed. Furthermore, I noticed that my device is overheating and experiencing battery drain issues. Can anyone attest to these issues? Is/are there any solution(s) available?
