Troubleshooting macOS Installation Failure on Ryzen 7 3700X with Radeon 5700

The issue you're encountering during the macOS installation process, where it stops with the message "An error occurred preparing the software update", is a common problem in Hackintosh setups, especially with AMD CPUs like your Ryzen 7 3700X. This error typically arises due to a mismatch or misconfiguration in the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) settings. Let's troubleshoot this issue based on your hardware specifications:

  1. CPU Compatibility: Ryzen CPUs require specific kernel patches to run macOS, as macOS is primarily designed for Intel CPUs. Ensure that your EFI folder has the necessary patches for AMD processors.

  2. GPU Compatibility: Your Radeon 5700 is natively supported in macOS, but make sure you're using the correct kexts (kernel extensions) and settings for AMD GPUs.

  3. Motherboard Settings: The MSI B450 Tomahawk should be compatible, but you need to check BIOS settings like disabling CSM, enabling Above 4G decoding, and setting the correct XHCI handoff.

  4. RAM: Your RAM configuration seems standard and should not cause issues.

  5. EFI Folder: The link to your EFI folder is helpful, but I can't access external links. Ensure your EFI folder contains the necessary kexts, SSDTs, and a properly configured config.plist for an AMD setup.

  6. macOS Version: Some versions of macOS have better compatibility with AMD CPUs. For instance, macOS Catalina and Big Sur have been successfully installed on similar AMD setups.

  7. Internet Connection During Installation: A stable internet connection is crucial during macOS installation, as it downloads additional components.

  8. Installer Integrity: Verify the integrity of your macOS installer. A corrupted installer can cause such errors.

  9. Verbose Mode: Boot in verbose mode (using the -v boot flag) to see more detailed error messages. This can provide clues to what is causing the installation to fail.

  10. EFI Configuration: Review your EFI configuration, particularly the config.plist file. Tools like ProperTree can be helpful for editing this file.

Without access to your EFI folder, I can only provide general advice. If you have specific questions about your EFI configuration or need further assistance, please provide more details about your EFI setup. Remember, building a Hackintosh involves a lot of trial and error, and community forums can be an invaluable resource.

i keep getting this when trying to install. an error occurred preparing the software update.

i keep getting this when trying to install. an error occurred preparing the software update.

It doesn't matter what version of mac os i try to install. The installer boots fine and downloads the installer from the recovery files then reboots to the apple logo saying 29 minutes remaining and gets to about 20 to 16 minutes remaining then this error pops up.

My specs are

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

GPU Radeon 5700

MotherBoard: MSI B450 Tomahawk
