Hi all, couple of noob questions (I’ve tried searching and read a few things but I’m a bit of a novice with this sort of thing - would appreciate if anyone can explain as if to a monkey…)
I have a 2009 Mac Pro, upgraded to 5.1. Running OSX 10.14 Mojave. GPU Radeon 7970 3gb.
Been editing FCPX for a couple of years, no problems. Recently started using Davinci and during heavy tasks I’m getting a black screen. I have to force power off the Mac and startup again. I think it could be a power issue as the Radeon is designed to draw more power than the mac PSU can provide. Hasn’t been an issue before but now I’m putting the card under more stress.
Am thinking to buy this external PSU https://amzn.eu/d/39cRf2t to power the GPU on its own.
1) Am I okay to NOT use an adapter to link the two PSU’s to startup at the same time. Ie: Can I just plug the external PSU into the Radeon and turn on the GPU first before turning on the computer, and switch off the GPU after shutting down the computer?
2) If I can do this then do I need to do anything else? Any other adapters or linking of wires? As you can guess I’m looking to do things with the least fiddling with the computer’s innards as possible! The Radeon has an 8 pin and 6 pin input, which the PSU linked above seems to provide.
Thank you in advance.
