Resolving Black Screen Issues with MSI RX 6600 XT on Hackintosh: A Comprehensive Guide

Guide:

Introduction: Upgrading to a more powerful graphics card like the MSI RX 6600 XT for your Hackintosh can bring great performance improvements, but it also comes with potential challenges. If you're facing persistent black screen issues, especially after turning off your monitor, this guide will help you diagnose and resolve the problem.

Step 1: Verify Hardware Compatibility:

  • Confirm that your hardware, especially the MSI RX 6600 XT, is compatible with macOS Ventura.
  • Check for any firmware updates for both your graphics card and motherboard.

Step 2: Review OpenCore Configuration:

  • Ensure your OpenCore setup aligns with the recommended configurations for Comet Lake.
  • Verify that all necessary ACPI files are present and correctly configured.

Step 3: Adjust Boot Flags:

  • Reevaluate your boot flags. Experiment with different combinations if needed.
  • Ensure that your config.plist file includes the necessary settings for your graphics card.

Step 4: Graphics Acceleration Configuration:

  • Check and configure your graphics acceleration settings for the MSI RX 6600 XT.
  • Experiment with different framebuffer patches for your card.

Step 5: Kernel Extensions (Kexts) and Drivers:

  • Ensure that you have the latest versions of essential kexts, especially those related to graphics.
  • Remove unnecessary kexts that might conflict with your GPU.

Step 6: Debugging with Verbose Boot:

  • Use the -v (verbose) boot flag to identify any specific issues during the boot process.
  • Analyze the verbose output to pinpoint potential problems.

Step 7: Power Management Settings:

  • Adjust power management settings in your config.plist file. Incorrect settings might contribute to the black screen problem.

Step 8: Additional Boot Flags:

  • Experiment with additional boot flags like agdpmod=pikera or others that might be specific to your GPU model.

Step 9: Community Support:

  • Seek assistance from the Hackintosh community forums. Share your hardware details, config.plist file, and verbose boot output for more targeted advice.

Step 10: Testing with Alternative Monitors and Cables:

  • Rule out potential hardware issues by testing with different monitors and cables.
  • Ensure that your monitor is recognized correctly in macOS.

Conclusion: Resolving black screen issues with the MSI RX 6600 XT on your Hackintosh requires a systematic approach, considering hardware compatibility, OpenCore configuration, boot flags, and kernel extensions. Be patient, document your changes, and leverage community support to troubleshoot effectively. With careful adjustments, you can enjoy the performance benefits of your upgraded graphics card without encountering black screen problems. Good luck!

Black Screen Problem with MSI RX 6600 XT

Hello, I'm experiencing an issue with my MSI RX 6600 XT Gaming X graphics card on my Hackintosh. I didn't encounter this problem when I was using the RX 560 in the past. I recently upgraded to the RX 6600 XT because my old RX 560 was no longer working.

The problem I'm facing is that when I turn off my LCD monitor and then switch it back on, the display remains black. However, the desktop itself hasn't gone to sleep because I can still hear the music I'm playing. Even after pressing keys on the keyboard or moving the mouse, the screen stays dark. To resolve this, I have to force shutdown the desktop, which is not ideal.

Additionally, sometimes when I turn on the desktop after a verbose boot, instead of showing the login screen, I'm greeted with a black screen. In this case, I also have to force shutdown the desktop.

I initially thought this might be an issue with macOS Monterey, so I recently clean installed Ventura and redo the EFI folder, but the problem persists. I followed the OpenCore guide for Comet Lake and ensured that I have the necessary ACPI files as required by the guide. I also followed the guide to configure the config.plist file and used the following boot flags: `-v debug=0x100 keepsyms=1 alcid=7 e1000=0 agdpmod=pikera`.

Here are my desktop hardware details:

- Motherboard: Gigabyte Z490 Aorus Master

- CPU: Intel Core i9-10900

- GPU: MSI Gaming X RX 6600 XT"

And I'm using Opencore 0.9.6
