Guide:
Introduction: If you are considering setting up an eGPU for your iMac 15,1 running Ventura and are deciding between a 6800 XT and Vega GPU, this guide will help you make an informed choice. AVX2 compatibility is a crucial factor, and we will explore whether a 6800 XT will work seamlessly with Ventura on your iMac 15,1.
Requirements:
- iMac 15,1 running Ventura
- OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP)
- Knowledge of Hackintosh configurations
Step 1: Verify AVX2 Compatibility:
- Confirm that your iMac 15,1 has a Haswell CPU, which supports AVX2 instructions.
- Ensure that your CPU is compatible with the AVX2 requirements for Ventura.
Step 2: Check Ventura Compatibility:
- Refer to the Ventura documentation to confirm the compatibility of your iMac model with Ventura.
- Review the list of currently supported and unsupported hardware in Ventura.
Step 3: Assess 6800 XT Compatibility:
- Understand that the 6800 XT is natively supported on macOS 11.4 and above.
- Check if Ventura's compatibility with the 6800 XT is explicitly mentioned in the documentation or community discussions.
Step 4: Consider Vega GPUs:
- Vega GPUs are known to work well with Ventura and have been tested extensively.
- Evaluate the performance and compatibility of Vega GPUs for video editing and motion graphics tasks.
Step 5: Community Feedback:
- Engage with the Ventura and Hackintosh communities to gather feedback on users' experiences with the 6800 XT.
- Seek recommendations and insights regarding the performance of both 6800 XT and Vega GPUs on similar setups.
Step 6: Evaluate Your Needs:
- Assess your specific requirements for video editing and motion graphics performance.
- Consider benchmarks and real-world usage scenarios to determine which GPU aligns better with your needs.
Conclusion: While the 6800 XT is natively supported on macOS 11.4 and above, its compatibility with Ventura on iMac 15,1 may depend on specific hardware considerations. Vega GPUs are known to work seamlessly with Ventura and could be a safer choice based on community-tested configurations. Consider reaching out to the Ventura community for the latest updates and insights on GPU compatibility. Make an informed decision that aligns with your iMac 15,1 setup and performance expectations. Good luck with your eGPU setup!
Hi all. I've been happily using Ventura on my 2014 iMac (15,1) and been considering setting up an eGPU. I was checking Vega 64, Radeon VII and 6800 XT. Looking to improve video editing/motion graphics performance.
Just read up on the topic of AVX2 and was trying to wrap my head around it. The CPU is Haswell, therefore supports AVX2, as far as I understand. So...
Should a 6800 XT work with OCLP Ventura, since it's natively supported macOS 11.4 and above, or am I safer with Vega?
Just wanted to make sure whether Navi GPUs are unsupported only for systems with non-AVX2 CPUs, or OCLP in general.
Thank you.
