Best OS for an early 2009 iMac (9,1)?

Hello everybody,

i need the collective knowledge of this sub: a friend asked me to update/upgrade an early 2009 iMac (24 inch, 4GB Ram, Core 2 Duo E8135). It will be used for light browsing, listening to music etc. but it needs to be rock solid and bother free, as it will be used by non-tech people. I didn't bother to search for the right ram as i remember that Macs of that time are really picky, but i decided to install an SSD, as they got dirt cheap (18€ for 240GB!, time flies...), but i'm struggling with the decision of the OS / method to install. Last officially supported OS is El Capitan, which is not an option (e.g. no recent browser available). Here are the viable options in my opinion (open for suggestions):

  1. High Sierra with dosdudes High Sierra Patcher: simple installation, hardware should be perfectly supported, no metal-related problems etc.
  2. High Sierra with Opencore Patcher: what would be the advantages over dosdudes way?
  3. Catalina with dosdudes Patcher: tried it, felt weird, videos on youtube ran slow, spotify did not start, ...
  4. Catalina with Opencore Patcher: would it be different?
  5. A more recent OS with Opencore Patcher? What are your experiences? As i said, it needs to be rock solid and i don't have time to search for a new wifi card, gpu etc.

What would you do?
