After years of using High Sierra due to having an NVIDIA Card, I finally upgraded to RX6600 CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1300x Overclocked to 4.1GHz SMBIOS - MacPro7,1 I actually upgraded from Ventura to Sonoma. Installation went well without any hiccups after disabling the following kexts. RestictEvents, Airportitlwm, IntelBTPatcher , BluetoolFixup , IntelBluetoothFirmware After installation I enabled the bluetooth kexts(which didn't need any upgrades) and upgraded the Airportitlwm to the Sonoma version which I found on Github. Huge thanks to https://github.com/zxystd for the work. You can find the kexts here - https://github.com/OpenIntelWireless/itlwm/issues/883 Enabling RestrictEvents kext results in an kernal panic, mostly it just requires an update to work with Sonoma. That's it. System was up and running without any issues so far. Time for some customizations. First I did a DRM Patching using WEG's patching guide. This made AppleTV and PrimeVideo to work flawlessly. Performance is also good for Daily tasks and some light 1080p Video Editing on FCP. Second of All, SURROUND SOUND. I love surround sound systems and now that Apple Music supports Dolby Atmos spatial audio, I really wanted to try it out. Let's talk about it. My Motherboard has ports for an 7.1 Surround Output. In Windows I used to have it. But in macOS every output jack is detected as an separate stereo output device. I thought that I am using an wrong Layout ID for my Audio Chip. But after some research I came to know that you have to create An Aggregated Audio setup inside an App called Audio MIDI Setup which is built-into macOS. But while using Layout ID 1 for AppleALC Kext, Only 3 of my 4 jacks were detected. But for Atmos to work you'll need a minimum of 8 Channels for an 5.1.2 Setup. I initially fixed this up by using my monitors output jack (Which gets it sound from the graphics card natively) as the extra 2 channels that I need to drive Atmos, but this felt way out of sync. So I started to use different layout IDs and found out that alcid=100 works the best. It enabled my 4th Audio Jack and then I created an Aggregated Speaker setup with 8 Channels in 5.1.2 Configuration. This is really huge for me as I don't need to buy an Receiver separately to use Atmos. You can get away with an decent Amplifier and speaker set to enjoy Atmos content from AppleTV and Apple Music. I Hope that this post helps someone who loves Surround sound like me. Now I need a little help, If I can get 2 More Audio output jacks, I'll have 12 Channels of output which can be used in 7.1.4 Configuration. Is there any sound card which is natively supported on macOS that I can use ? [link] [comments] |
