Won't restart with USB after patcher installed.

Mac pro 2010 10.14. Trying to install Monteray. Used Dosdude1 to get to 10.14. I get all the way to the USB drive configured and when I try to reboot my machine with the option key held down, it just sits there, black screen. Try rebooting multiple times, but the system will not start up until I remove the USB drive. Then it starts normally. My configuration has a 1T SSD drive installed in the expansion bay as a SATA, 4 spinning disks configured as a RAID with 18 TB storage and 56GB RAM. I do have a USB 2.0 bus. Processor is a Also has a metal graphics card driving 2 4K monitors. I disconnected the 4K monitors, reinserted the original graphics card and it made no diffrence. I looked at the USB drive in the disk utility and it checks out AND it is flagged as a boot disk. If I try to use the Startup disk control panel, it does not see the USB stick. I followed the directions to create the USB drive correctly and just in case, I did it again, double checking as I went. The machine came with a USB 2.0 hub in one of the expansion slots so I put the USB drive into that instead and it seemed to boot better, but holding down the option key was ignored and the machine booted normally. I have an external drive enclosure (firewire) so I tried that. Same thing - looks like it should be bootable, but it ignores on startup. And startup disk control panel does not show the drive as a choice, but does show an older drive in the enclosure that does have 10.11 installed on it. I've run out of things I can think to do. Any advice would be appreciated. I see that there are preferences in the installer, but they are legion and I have no idea which to use.
