Medion P6705 Big Sur struggles

So I've been trying to turn my Medion Erazer P6705 laptop into a Hackintosh after having success with two other builds (an Acer Swift 3 gold laptop and a custom Skylake desktop build).

Specs of the laptop are as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i7 8750H

GPU: Intel UHD 630 + Nvidia GTX 1050Ti (used -wegnoegpu boot arg to disable it)

RAM: Samsung 16GB DDR4 @ 2667MHz (two 8GB sticks)

Storage: a 1TB SATA HDD

Bootloader: OpenCore 0.7.6

This laptop is not as straightforward as my other two. It has some issues that I am not too sure how to resolve.

The main issue right now is it just won't install Big Sur no matter what I do. I've tried following various parts of Dortania's OpenCore troubleshooting guide to no avail. It all ends up the same way: in failure.

I used the vanilla guide to set up my EFI and config.plist. I made sure to follow the correct Coffee Lake laptop guide. I basically did the same thing I did with my other two builds. Followed the instructions carefully, checking that I did everything right before proceeding.

What happens is it'll try to install and manage to get to the 2nd stage (Apple logo on black background). Once it gets to "Less than a minute remaining", it will halt there indefinitely. When this happens, the HDD LED stops completely and my CPU fan runs a little faster. No matter how long I leave it, it will not return to life. I have to cut power.

I've read online that some had success by simply leaving it for a while and then force rebooting. No such luck for me. Once I reboot, I do not see the HDD as an option to boot into like I have seen on my other two builds. This means it's actually halting and not completing some major step. What causes it to halt? I don't know.

If I boot back into the "Mas OS installer" (the 2nd stage), it'll just restart from 29 minute remaining. It'll either freeze at 29/28 minutes remaining (basically early on), or it'll sit here for a bit before moving to some "Mac OS upgrade assistant" screen where it'll tell me it failed to install some software update.

I basically have to start the installation again (1st stage) which is a waste of time as it still just fails. Sometimes it doesn't make it to the 2nd stage, it might freeze on the 1st stage at 15 minutes remaining. It usually gets to the 2nd stage though and just freezes either early on, or manages to progress all the way to "Less than a minute remaining".

Here's an OpenCore log of my recent Big Sur install attempt: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1T-t2Qw4uktGHBj3FvTqgQkAee59aE7hv/view?usp=sharing

I have removed the serial info from config.plist.

Some things to note about the EFI folder:

  • I've tried making it as bare as possible, with very limited amount of kexts and drivers. Nothing helps

  • I've tried several SMBIOS' (Macmini 8.1, MacBookPro15.1,15.2 and 15.3)

I also tried to install Catalina and while it did also have some freezing issues, it actually did install that and runs somewhat OK. It has a few issues post-install (ACPI errors on boot, screen taking a little too long to show an image once at login screen and not detecting charger), but when it's booted into Catalina, it runs OK and does not freeze. The EFI linked above works for Catalina.

I went to Catalina because I wanted to try and see if it was perhaps Big Sur that wasn't playing nice. So far, it looks like my laptop does not like Big Sur.

Perhaps someone here knows what's wrong. Maybe there's an issue with my config.plist I am missing (hoping so).
