Well it took nearly 2 years (*cough* because of the infamous Dune case scam), and a few upgrades along the way, but I'm chalking this one up as done. My goal: At the start of the pandemic I decided it was time to can my super old i5 based Hackintosh and build the "real deal." The old machine was made from spare parts from our old office, and the monitors from the warehouse (so you can imagine how it looked). I wanted to build the closest (best looking) and fastest Hackintosh for <$5k that would give any stock cheesegrater Mac Pros in Geekbench's Mac top 5 a run for it. Specs are:
Only 3 quirks remain:
Here's where it started...April 2020 I had everything but the Dune case. I had a 3950x and a 5700xt back then (no photos, sorry). I had the box up and running in about 12 hours - it wasn't nearly as easy as my i5 based one, but I was thrilled to see how stable this machine would be over time. It's been easily more robust than my 2017 MBP! In time, both to keep the cat out, and improve cooling, I came up with this...again this build ended up around $5k, and it was being held together by gaff tape. Oh, this was around when I finally found a 6900xt at a good price. Except it wouldn't clear the case, so the radiator and 1/2 fans ended up on the outside 😂 Finally, I gave up on the Dune case ever showing up, and got a Lian-Li Odyssey X. Not the best cooling high end case, but after weeks of looking, I decided it was close enough to the look of a Mac Pro, with an extra personal touch. So here goes...1.5 years later, the look I wanted was complete :) Remember the computer (maybe?) in the Gaff Tape Bandit case above??? And that's not to say we don't still have a little fun with this bad boy. Again I have some different configs saved, but I tend to keep it on 4.625ghz all core, at least until I find a better PBO configuration. Remember my goal at the beginning? I still had to break my way into Geekbench's Mac top 5 charts. Let's take a look shall we? Seeing the M1 immediately gave me the chills Shit lol (I was going to add prices to these, but the Apple Store is down for Black Friday) I admit...before I show my results, I bumped my CPU up 25mhz to 4.65ghz (where I can't seem to squeeze more out by all core), and ran Geekbench 5 in Ubuntu 20.04. Why? Because I wanted to hit my goal based on factors within my control, and see the strongest performance out of my work. Well boys - we did it:I swear I don't have the secret to hitting 7ghz on a consumer AIO This technically puts us #1 in single core, above the M1...and just in 2nd place for multi core, between 2 $$$$ Mac ProsNot bad for 1.5+ years of work 😅 Thank you to the many folks here who have helped me along the way, put up with my wreckless overclocking, and had no idea what my project even was. Bonus: I didn't have to use the fire extinguisher my gf insisted I have nearby. Hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did sharing 😁 [link] [comments] |
