On Catalina and previous versions, I used a method to enable custom HiDPI scaling modes on my Mac, similar to what the Macbook range can do with their Retina Displays™.
So one of the easiest ways to do it, is to generate your custom files using Hackintool app. https://github.com/headkaze/Hackintool/releases
Open the app, navigate to the "Displays" pane. Select an appropriate display and resolution. I have a Dell 2k screen so I chose 2k resolution. Now hit the + button followed by the export button. see screenshot
Now reboot and using a free app called RDM or something similar you can easily switch resolution. Eg I can now switch to 1920x1080 HiDPI mode or others like 1600x900 etc (⚡Is hidpi)
This will export a file and a plist which you should put in /Library/Displays/Contents/Resources/Overrides
In previous versions it went into /System/Library/ ... but now in Big Sur the /System folder is locked, so we put it in /Library.
I think you need SIP disabled, not sure.
Source is a google translate of a Chinese discussion of this app, they have a modified version which does a one click of the above.
