Since Catalina, macOS requires an EC device defined in the ACPI tables.
When I first installed Catalina with Clover, I used an ACPI binary patch to rename my Dell laptop's existing ECDV
device to EC
. Upon switching to OpenCore, I noticed that the guide has instructions on making a new fake EC
device, and keeping ECDV
active as well.
Are there any practical differences between these two methods? (Note: when using a fake EC
, both EC
and ECDV
show in IORegExplorer - if there are no other differences, it looks like renaming would use slightly less RAM.)
