old AMD system - vanilla install; boots installer but mouse all jumpy / unusable

hi folks,

first time trying a vanilla opencore-based install; also first time with AMD. this is mainly for practice since i'm thinking about going for a threadripper hackintosh later on.

i'm trying to install on an ASUS am1a-i mini-itx motherboard with a kabini APU . i'm also rocking an ancient EVGA GT640 video card with an UEFI bios upgrade. i've followed the vanilla guide for 15h/16h AMD processors to create a config.plist for opencore. the config checks OK with the online sanity checker.

i managed to get the catalina installer to boot from USB, but a) the mouse and keyboard don't work if plugged into any of the USB2.0 ports (the laser on the mouse flashes periodically but never comes on) and b) the mouse and keyboard do get power and sort of work when plugged into the USB3.0 ports but the mouse motion is terrible. seconds go by between moving the mouse and the pointer actually moving. basically unusable.

without being able to see any of OSX's logging it is hard to know what is going on. and even if i could boot single user from the installer, since the keyboard doesn't really work i'd be hard pressed to investigate.

the motherboard does have a PS/2 mouse and keyboard connector. will those work with opencore?

maybe this mobo is too old and would require more ACPI patches than SSDT-EC-USBX-AMD.aml provides?

other ideas?

thanks.
