Updated to 10.14.6 on a Clover vanilla install with a skylake processor and now stuck on boot. Advice?

The boot is stuck on old data swfs_pid_entry <ptr> updaterules_msg <ptr> which gets repeated ad infinitum.

I am considering

1. Updating Clover to the latest, or
2. Updating the EFI to OpenCore

Other ideas?

How would I go about 1 or 2 with a system which does not boot?
