Time Machine doesn’t work in recovery mode

So I backup to time machine regularly, but my backups don’t show up when I boot to recovery mode. I select “restore from snapshot”, I select my external drive, but then it says it can’t find any backups on the drive. This is concerning cuz I want to know if the boot loader breaks or something I can still backup to a snapshot. Anyone know what could be the problem? I use open core

Specs: i7 coffee lake // z370 ASRock // using portable external HDD
