Z390 aorus pro wifi (ITX)... is this a lemon?

Hi all--

Longtime lurker, first time poster. I could use some advice on my current state!

I'm an audio guy, and I took the hack plunge in 2017, building up a gigabyte z370 itx with:

i7 8700k

internal u630 graphics

coolermaster 150 CPU cooler

32gb (2x16) corsair ddr4

m.2 samsung boot drive

2 hard drives & a samsung SSD

all running 10.13.6 in a thermaltake core v1 case. It was my first build, I went in clueless, multibeasted it and really... it worked out of the box. audio, ethernet to my metric halo interface, wifi after replacing the card. Easy Peasy.... too easy.

until one day in August 2019 and it didn't turn on. tested the powersupply, everything else-- the mobo had given up the ghost. K. Couldn't find a z370 board to replace it, so after some quick googling-- i needed this online asap as it's my main production computer-- i went 390. The gigabyte z390 arrived and suffice it to say, it hasn't been a straight line.

after re-assembling, it took forever to even boot with Mojave. I tried various EFI's and plists. I tried using hackintool for usb.kext (that worked great, actually). The various aptio options, uefi64, etc... nothing worked. I knew i wanted a clean install, but i was under duress and needed it up and running. multibeast again made it work, although it was sluggish and buggy compared to the previous z370 build. Weird stuff kept happening, like Apple News no longer working because of a framebuffer issue.

just before the corona quarantine, i knew i'd have to move my tutoring world from in-person to online, so i got a an Rx580. Installed fine. I was away for a week, came back and got the prohibitory sign on boot. I figured, OK, now is the right time to actually do this correctly, so after searching and bookmarking a ton, I wiped the m.2 boot drive and went in with the Vanilla install.

I've learned alot (like this board ONLY likes fake SMC), made a lot of good learning mistakes but at this point... it's inconsistent. In the build's current state, graphics are fine, usb 90%works because of a DSDT i downloaded (though i'd like to get it fresh via usb.kext), but it doesn't sleep/shutdown, and i have to boot from the USB mojave installer, even after copying over the EFI multiple times.

I know from experience that z390 boards are quirky at best, and I'm certain there's a lot of user error in my errors but i can't help but feel like i've got a lemon on my hands. So I'd love the r/hackintosh community's input. Happy to share efis, plist, etc.

What would you do-- Do i just start afresh from the vanilla install? Kick clover out the door and go OC? buy someone's dusty z370 off of craiglist and rebuild the glory years?

I'd love to get this rock solid and dependable-- when it works its great, but always with the concern that it may shit the bed once i hit shutdown.

Thanks in advance!
