I upgraded my Coffee Lake build with an RX 5700 (Sapphire reference) after support for it was released in 10.15.1. Everything's working great, except one slight annoyance that I can't figure out; hoping people with more knowledge might know what's going on:
Heavier system operations (mostly disk?) cause graphics and audio to stutter. Even more confusing, the issue is resolved with a sleep/wake cycle. The sleep needs to go down to the power state (blinking power indicator) before wake to fix. The sleep/wake fix suggests to me that this is power management related? But the relationship with audio/disk is unclear to me.
Any ideas are appreciated! Happy to answer questions/debug further, and thanks in advance 🙂
System details:
- Intel i7-8700k (not overclocked)
- Sapphire RX 5700, reference design
- ASUS Z370-E Gaming
- Samsung 970 Evo NVMe
- macOS 10.15.4 (though this issue goes back to 10.15.1)
- OpenCore 0.5.7 (just upgraded, issue exists in prior versions; standard config including Lilu, WhateverGreen, VirtualSMC, AGPMInjector, AppleALC)
- MacPro7,1 SMBIOS (though same issue existed with iMacPro1,1)
- Boot args:
keepsyms=1 alcid=7 agdpmod=pikera
- External Schiit USB DAC and amp for audio, so audio codec/AppleALC shouldn't be the issue
What I've tried/further observations:
- I just added AGPMInjector hoping it would help, it didn't
- Intel Power Gadget shows CPU power/freq/temps are behaving normally
- Geekbench scores for both CPU and GPU generally line up with expectations
