Silent AMD Hackintosh

Silent AMD Hackintosh

I have been out of the PC building for over a decade due to owning various MacBook Pros and found myself wanting a more powerful computer to run some Mac applications.

The Hackintosh development has definitely made things easier with AMD Ryzen CPUs. It is now relatively easy and affordable to build a machine that can perform as well as the iMac Pro for a fraction of the price.

For this build, I went with a 2nd gen Ryzen 2600x since I got the CPU from Microcenter for just $79.99 on a special sale. Along with a $20 discount when bundled with a motherboard, the CPU and motherboard used here was less than $200! For this price, it's worth awaiting for Ryzen gen 4 without losing much on resale of the hardware.

For the graphics card, I went with a MSI RX580 since this has good compatibility within OS X and a decent performer in gaming and rendering programs I use within OS X.

I initially started the build with a 1TB Samsung 960 EVO SSD but upgraded shortly to a pair of 512GB M.2 NVME SSD from Inland. The pair allows me to dual boot Windows 10 and Mac OS Catalina without having to deal with SATA configurations and problems of running off one physical drive.

For wifi, a Fenvi T919 PCIe card was added. This card has native support within Catalina. While in Windows 10, the onboard Intel wifi card is used.

The intent was also to build a machine that is as quiet as possible. The first power supply I went with was a EVGA 600BQ which was quiet on low loads, but with the CPU and GPU running, the PSU becomes quite audible. The cooler on the GPU was also very loud when being stressed. To address the noise from these two components, I returned the 600BQ and went with the Corsair RM750x which is nearly silent on max load. The PSU fan stays off most of the time during normal tasks. As for the graphics card, I removed the original fans and brackets from it's heatsink and installed two 120mm Scythe Kaze PWM fans on PCI brackets that is connected to the GPU's fan connector with a PWM splitter. This allowed the fans to receive power and speed adjustments based on the GPU usage and temperatures. With the modified GPU cooling, the noise levels are significantly lower. Even on max load, the fans for the GPU are very quiet. The GPU temperatures are also better with this configuration than the original cooler. Paired with the massive Ninja 5 CPU cooler, the system is silent on idle and light loads. I can only hear the machine if there is high demand for the GPU.

I housed all these components in a nearly two decade old case. The Cooler Master ATC-110 is one of my favorite cases ever and I purchased this one used nearly eight years ago. This is the first time I'm building a machine with it. While it's a great looking and high quality case with all aluminum components, the case only supports 80mm fans. I am waiting patiently on my shipment of the Dune Pro case which will complete this Hackintosh build.

The only issue within this build is the sleep function with Catalina. However, I run this machine 24/7 to host my Plex media so it isn't an issue for me. The Hackintosh runs on OpenCore 0.55 with Catalina 10.15.3
