Hackintosh reddit post:
So a few notes before we get started:
- GPU arrives Friday
- I never thought that a Windows install would be the one thing that didn’t work
- SDDT-Time does not do your
config.plist
for you - From parts arrival to booting without a USB took 7.5 Hours
The Build
The H510 is a fantastic case to build in. Super easy to work with and the built in cable routing even fit my 24pin connector. I’ve built six computers before this, so I’ve gotten used to the process. One scary thing was my motherboard arriving without a cpu socket cover. Luckily, all the pins were fine. Do not buy the cpu cooler I got. It has the worst mounting mechanism I have ever seen. It adapts LGA to use the AMD mounting method, and the results are a cooler that does not feel very secure. I will be getting something else as soon as possible.
The install
So it took me forever to get SDDT-Time up and running, since my Windows usb refused to work. I eventually just installed Ubuntu and got it to work that way. After that I had problems with my EFI structure. Turns out, you need two copies of opencore.efi
. One in tools
and one in OC
. Also, the config.plist
sanity checker was an amazing way to make sure all my settings were right. Seriously without it I would have been lost. You can find it here. Also make sure to turn your language setting to your local language or you will have to deal with Russian. My screen had a pink tint throughout the install that had to be fixed by forcing the display to be RGB. I had trouble getting the guide I found to work, but it turns out that instead of copy through the cp
command in order to get it to stick. (If you are having trouble with this, please dm me, I might can help)
Next Steps/Questions
So it is late now and I can’t tinker around more this evening. I do have a few things I want to do in the next few days, and a few questions about them.
-
Mapping USB ports Is it necessary to do this? I can’t find a solid answer.
-
Installing GPU It seems like the GPU install would involve changing some info in my
config.plist
file. Like system type and default graphics options. But I’m not sure if there are other steps. -
Stress testing/ fan testing It seems like my fans have all remained very quiet. Is there a way I could stress test the heat output/fan curve of my computer? I want to make sure everything is hooked up well.
-
Final cut imports It seems like it wouldn’t let me create optimized media. I had .h265 files on an SD card that I imported into a final cut project on an SSD, and it seemed to just instantly import. It seems like they just copied over very fast, but I’ll have to investigate this further tomorrow.
Closing Statement
I am very thankful for thus community and their help. Building a hackintosh with opencore felt even easier than I remember clover being a few years ago, but that could be me having more wisdom now than I did then. I am excited to keep tinkering and make this machine be the best it can!
