Always need to connect USB WIFI dongle or Android Tethering before booting for internet to work

Is this really the case for laptops? I have already installed the necessary kexts. I can't get internet to work connecting the usb wifi dongle when hack is already booted, also with Usb tethering using HornDis. TIA for any help
