Hi all,
First time poster, short time lurker.
I am a self employed web dev/digital support/content creator/designer, kind of a jack of all trades type dude. My work is mainly digital which has lead me to the idea that having a rig at home to do some heavier work that my current Macbook Pro can't handle easily would be a good investment going forward. I also would like to investigate PC gaming. I intend to use the MacOS side for creative and the Windows side for gaming.
So here's my issue and concern. After reading a little on this subreddit and watching a few videos on youtube, it seems achievable to dual boot Windows and MacOS on one machine. So here in lies my first question:
1. Does building a dual boot machine have any impact on performance of either OS?
things to consider:
- I will only be purchasing one graphics card.
- I would like to achieve 1440p 60fps gaming.
That being said, if OS performance is going to be an issue then there really is no point me trying to dual boot and may as well flag the project....but I have always been interested in building a Hackintosh and am seriously considering a couple of builds that are within my budget. I feel like it goes without saying that the OS' will be run and booted from two seperate SSDs
- CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
- GPU: Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB WINDFORCE OC 6G Video Card
- RAM: Kingston - FURY 16 GB (1 x 16 GB) DDR4-2666 Memory
- Motherboard/Laptop model: Gigabyte - B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
and
- CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor
- GPU: Gigabyte - Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB WINDFORCE OC 6G Video Card
- RAM: Kingston - Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
- Motherboard/Laptop model: Asus - ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard
my current Macbook pro:
- Hardware: 15 inch mid 2014 macbook pro
- CPU: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
- RAM: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
2. Am I looking at much of a macOS performance increase compared to my current hardware? ie How well does Mojave run on Ryzen hardware? Are we losing out on any particular features?
things to consider:
- I don't know a heckin much about hardware performance so if this is a stupid question just say "of course you will ya heckin idiot"
- What are some common features that are non functional running macOS on Ryzen hardware
Now I guess we can address the elephant in the room, the gaming side.
3. Is there any documentation of dual boot machines, aiming to run high res/frame rate games, suffering because of the set up?
things to consider:
- Again, I know very little about this space and from what I understand, the OS' will be separately configurable (please correct me on that) so optimising games on the windows side will be ok?
With all that said, I am not concrete on anything. I am 100% open to putting together a list of parts around an intel based CPU (I know AMD can be troublesome) and if that is going to be the easiest and reliable route than so be it.
I want this to be a learning experience and I want to make the investment to grow my skills in this area and take on more work while also allowing myself an outlet for downtime.
I'm getting a bit of an idea through this thread but my budget is a bit higher than that and that was 11 months ago. The main take away from that was:
- intel cpu
- install macOS then bootcamp Windows (performance wasn't really covered)
My main gripe is that I want the machine to run as good as it possibly can and I understand a Hackintosh wont run perfectly but from what I've read you can get pretty damn close and that's where this support is needed should I choose to go ahead with the build.
Any input is appreciated. Sorry for the long post, like I said, first time poster and want to get a sound idea on how to proceed.
Thanks everyone!
