Use my Raspberry Pi as a second screen?

My motherboard has a single HDMI port and a single VGA port (which doesn't work in macOS). I have a Raspberry Pi plugged into the second screen I used to use before upgrading to Mojave (when I switched to integrated graphics). Is there a way to use the Raspberry Pi to connect macOS to that other screen?

- I've tried ScreenRecycler, but it doesn't work on 10.11+.

- AirDisplay and iDisplay offer similar functionality, but their protocols are proprietary and there are no linux clients.

- I've tried Kodi's AirPlay option, but that's audio only.

- There used to be an AirPlay server for the Raspberry Pi called rPlay, but that's abandonware and no longer works.

If I had some way to make macOS think it was plugged into another screen, I could probably use the built in VNC server, but I don't know how to do that.

Is there any way?
