Hey, this is my first posting! A little background with my history with Hackintosh... about 4 years ago I was just getting into computers as a career and really didn’t know much. I tried the whole Hackintosh thing on an old Gateway laptop and (surprise) had nothing but issues. I was stubborn and wanted to learn how to configure everything just right, but after a whole summer of tinkering after work, I gave up at one point.
I joined a band that everyone else but me uses Logic Pro (only for Mac). If you’re not familiar, it’s an amazing program and I needed it. I decided to jump back into the world of Hackintosh. I’m now a (fairly green) Network Engineer, but felt confident. I got my hands on a Dell 9020 that was being recycled at my work for some reason. So....it was free... brought it home, put in an SSD, RX 570 8GB, 16GB RAM, a new PSU and installed Mojave in one night. I couldn’t believe it. I can’t believe I spent a whole summer trying to figure this out! Fortunately, there is this amazing community of friendly techs sharing their knowledge.
Also got a 4x 2.5” HDD drive bay that fit into one of the 5.25” slots. I just click out the Mac drive, push the Windows drive in, and it boots Windows- reverse for Mac. There’s two 3.5” 2TB drives formatted as FAT32, so they talk to both systems. Now I can use the RX 570 in Mojave to push a nice 4K production desktop, and can still use it to play games in Windows.
Best part is the cost: Dell Optiplex 9020 (i5-4670) - Free 16GB RAM - Had it sitting around (ddr3) ASRock RX 570 8GB - $139 (plus two free games thanks to NewEgg) TCL 43” 4K Roku TV - $250 (I don’t do any competitive gaming - don’t mind a slower response, but color is fantastic) SilverStone 620W PSU - $60 Mac-like keyboard on Amazon - $40 Two SP 120GB SSDs - $20/each Two 2TB 3.5” drives - free from work (I have a cool boss)
I think that’s about it. Sorry for the huge posting, but I’m just excited to be using such a great setup for that ~$500 price. And Logic works perfect! Big shout out to everyone keeping the Hackintosh community alive. Now that I’ve gone through this, I made this account to try to help out fellow strugglers.
