Disk Utility crashes when trying to format install partition

I've been out of the hackintosh game since 10.11 and now I'm trying to get 10.14 installed on my pc.

The installer boots and I have sound and proper video (!!) but I can't get it to format my install partition. It is an empty unallocated 60gb partition. I open Disk Utility, click Erase and tellit to format to Extended Journaled. Disk Utility then abruptly closes. If I open it again and try to format the partition it tells me there isn't enough space in the partition, which seems like an odd error.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
