Preview on Mojave no longer working

(More of an App Help request than build help)

I have Mojave running on my main board; Gigabyte GA-H270M-D3H with a Radeon RX 580 (had an Asus GTX 970 a few months ago), as well as my laptop, a Dell Latitude E5530. Preview on the main rig was running smoothly up until a month ago when it would no longer open documents and just hang instead. Even in the Finder and clicking the icon preview or album view, images would not load.

A tip I used years ago was to simply copy an app from a running OS to another, and that would fix it. So I dragged and dropped the Preview.app from my laptop to a USB drive, then from the USB drive to the Applications folder in my main rig. However, I got a pop-up telling me that the Preview app (original, non-functional) couldn't be modified or replaced as it was part of the OS. So I renamed the Preview app on the flash drive to Preview 2, then dragged and dropped it to the Applications folder. That copy worked, but I ran into the same problems as double-clicking a picture (I tried multiple) to open in Preview caused it to hang, as well as opening Preview and selecting a photo from the "open..." menu bar gave me the same results.

I then found this link from Apple in 2016 showing another way to get it working. I didn't try the stackexchange link in the thread, but rather the steps in the second-to last post. That did not work either.

I have no problems starting from scratch and reinstalling everything again, as I did it to start fresh when doing the video card upgrade. However I'd like to circumvent that if possible and simply fix the Preview.app instead. Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to try? Thank you.
