[Almost Golden Build] 9900K / Phantom Gaming Mini-ITX / RX580 Running Mojave

First post on Reddit, hope it's okay! 😅 I wanted to post about my experience and knowledge in the hopes that these resources might help someone else.

Links / Helpful Resources I referenced at some point

Hardware

  • Intel i9-9900k
  • Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac v1.50 BIOS
  • AMD MSI-RX 580 8gb v1
  • Corsair (2x8gb) Vengeance LPX RAM
  • Samsung 970 EVO 500gb NVMe SSD
  • Corsair H100i Pro 240mm AIO Cooler
  • Corsair SF600 Watt (Gold)
  • Noctua 92mm Fan (For Intake)
  • Streacom DA2 Mini-ITX Case (Silver)
  • BCM94350ZAE WiFi + BT1

1 Swapped out Internal Wi-Fi

What works

  • Sleep1
  • Shutdown2
  • iGPU for Accelerated Graphics
  • Motherboard Audio3
  • USB 3.0 speeds with custom SSDT
  • Motherboard Wi-Fi / Bluetooth after Broadcom chip swap
  • Airdrop
  • Ethernet
  • Front-Panel USB-C Port4

1 - Sleep actually shuts off components and wakes properly so far without issues AFAIK. However, I haven't tested extremely long periods of sleep yet.

2 - I had lots of issues with shutdown into rebooting, until I updated the BIOS to v1.50. Be aware that you need to add a fix if updating the BIOS past 1.20 since there's a weird BIOS bug on MacOS for this motherboard specifically.

3 - Case audio does work with the REALTEK kext and my audio layout in the config.plist setting I currently have, but I swapped cases recently and the DA2 has no front panel audio input

4 - I haven't done a lot of testing with what does and does not work, but since it's technically just connected to a USB 3.0 header it works at least with USB flash drives. Not 100% sure why, but they don't automatically mount when connected.

What Doesn't Work

  • Thunderbolt 3

General Installation Comments

I did a vanilla install and was able to fix most problems using a text editor, IORegistryExplorer, MaciASL, and Clover Configurator. Bear in mind, there's a few kexts that need to be placed in /Library/Extensions but I'll need some more time to double check which kexts those are. (Sorry, this isn't really a guide 😔)

Final Thoughts

I wanted to post, since I only got to where I am with this build because of the Hackintosh community. This was my first time building a PC and attempting to create a Hackintosh and I have to say, it's been pretty amazing once you get everything working (except of Thunderbolt 3). That being said, it's not something that's likely going to happen overnight, or even over a weekend (especially if you're working with motherboards or CPUs that came out very recently).

I'm no expert by any means, but I hope this information helps someone out there! Thanks all!
